NYConnects

Some reflections about the talks…(✿◠‿◠)

Ivan Teo Teochew Chef

On 14 May, Mr Ivan Yeo shared his experiences and journey as a Teochew Chef. He creates Teochew fusion dishes that are unique, and is a co-founder of The 1925 Brewing Co. He also strongly believe that we should never try to make yourself believe that you are from another race, neglect our own culture and roots, or receive so much impact from modernisation that we forget who we truly are.

Personal reviews:

3 Ideas I found useful from NYConnects

2 reasons why I found these ideas useful

1 application I have for these ideas

athena: from NYConnects, I learnt some interviewing skills, how to choose items to be put into the video, and that it is important to preserve our traditional culture and food. I found these ideas useful as I can better understand the different dishes of the different dialect groups, and also how to have interesting “材料” in the video. One application I have for these ideas is that I can source and interview interesting people in Chinatown, for the video.

caitlin: 3 things I found useful from ny connects
1)I learnt about some interviewing techniques, like how to plan and design the interview to being punctual and respectful
2)I learnt the importance of preserving our heritage and culture
3)I also learnt about how Singaporean food can be transformed into fusion food
2 reasons why I found these ideas useful
1)our project was about food and heritage
2) we had to interview people when we went to Chinatown
1 application I have for these ideas
1) applying it to the video we are going to make

caroline: I feel that the NY connects sessions were very helpful in helping us decide what is important or unimportant to put in the video and I also learnt many interviewing skills. I also learnt that it is very important to preserve our local culture and cuisines. After the sessions, I found that I could better understand the food cultures of the different cultures or dialect groups, and how to make our videos or presentations more interesting. In Chinatown me and my teammates could interview the people with more confidence.

chan yan: I feel that NYConnects has helped me learn the importance of keeping our traditions and how we can do that while keeping up with the modern world. I also learnt how our shows are made to attract viewers. These are useful as they constantly remind me to appreciate our traditions and cultures and makes me want to find out more about it. I can apply this to my daily life when I ask more questions about why certain things are done that way so I can increase my knowledge and help others learn more too.

qiao li: Three ideas I found useful from nyconnects include interviewing skills, how to modify traditional foods in order to suit the taste of young people and appreciating our roots and cultures. Two reasons why I find these ideas useful is because firstly, they directly or indirectly allow us to appreciate our culture/heritage, and also the interviewing skills are useful as they will help us to better gather opinions and views from people. One way I am going to apply these ideas is in the chinese video. I will use the interview skills to gather ideas from people and the appreciation of our culture will help us to create meaningful content for the video.
